A Cross-Layer Approach to Enhance QoS for Multimedia Applications Over Satellite
نویسندگان
چکیده
The need for on-demand QoS support for communications over satellite is of primary importance for distributed multimedia applications. This is particularly true for the return link which is often a bottleneck due to the large set of end-users accessing a very limited uplink resource. Facing this need, Demand Assignment Multiple Access (DAMA) is a classical technique that allows satellite operators to offer various types of services, while managing the resources of the satellite system efficiently. Tackling the quality degradation and delay accumulation issues that can result from the use of these techniques, this paper proposes an instantiation of the Application Layer Framing (ALF) approach, using a crosslayer interpreter (xQoS-Interpreter). The information provided by this interpreter is used to manage the resource provided to a terminal by the satellite system in order to improve the quality of multimedia presentations from the end user’s point of view. Several experiments are carried out for different loads on the return link. Their impact on QoS is measured through different application as well as network level metrics. M. Gineste (B) · N. Cross-layer anticipation of resource allocation for multimedia applications based on SIP signaling over DVB-RCS Satellite System
This paper introduces a cross-layer approach for improving QoS guaranties to interactive multimedia applications over an efficient satellite access assignment scheme (ondemand). It particularly focuses on the communication opening which represents the weakness of on-demand capacity allocation in the satellite context (due to significant delays). It finally presents experimental results of the v...
متن کاملCross-Layer Radio Resource Management Protocols for QoS Provisioning in Multimedia Wireless Networks
This chapter introduces the cross layer design for resource allocation over multimedia wireless networks. Conventional layered packet scheduling and call admission control schemes are presented and a number of cross-layered protocols that are recently proposed are investigated. The chapter highlights the QoS improvement and the performance gain obtained while considering the interlayer dependen...
متن کاملA Survey on Cross-Layer Design Frameworks for Multimedia Applications over Wireless Networks
In the last few years, the Internet throughput, usage and reliability have increased almost exponentially. The introduction of broadband wireless mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and cellular networks together with increased computational power have opened the door for a new breed of applications to be created, namely real-time multimedia applications. Delivering real-time multimedia traffic ove...

Next-generation broadband satellite systems will have the capability to provide costeffective universal broadband access for the users. In order to meet users’ requirements on high quality multimedia services, many enhancements have to be made on the existing satellite technologies. One of the promising methods is the introduction of cross-layer design. There are several advantages of a layered...
متن کاملCross-layer quality-driven adaptation for scheduling heterogeneous multimedia over 3G satellite networks
Wireless networks are experiencing a paradigm shift from focusing on the traditional data transfer to accommodating the rapidly increasing multimedia traffic. Hence, their scheduling algorithms have to concern not only network-oriented quality-of-service (QoS) profiles, but also application-oriented QoS targets. This is particularly challenging for satellite multimedia networks that lack fast c...
